But it doesn’t have to be.
Here are seven tips to achieve a better work-life balance for you and your family.
1 Plan your work and home priorities together. Know when you have key dates and activities in each area that will take more of your time. For example, if a work project means you’ll stay late most nights one week, then plan in quality family time on the weekend.
2 Understand how you use your time. Write a list of how you really use your time, in half hour slots. Identify where you waste time, watch too much TV, where you could multi task (such as commuting) and make change it to fit in more of what you need and want to do.
3 Have a focus for your week. Take 10 minutes to think about your week ahead. What demands are people making of you? What would you like to get done? Is there one thing that is most important to achieve that week? If you have a focus, then you will be less likely to get distracted and overwhelmed.
4 Create boundaries. It’s all too easy to get into unhelpful habits like staying at work late every night but not taking the time back, or taking too much work home. Or if you have your own business and work from home, like I do, then create a work space and put the work away when you are done. If you need to do extra hours, plan when you are working extra, and most importantly, when you are not. Then you can have complete focus on yourself and your family when you are switched off from work.

5 Time for you. Plan in and prioritise “me time” each week. Whether it’s having a bath a taking 20 minutes to read a novel, to do an exercise class or meet a friend for a coffee or drink. Taking time for yourself will help you recharge and keep things in perspective. Download my free workbook to help you work out how you can create a little more time in your week.
6 Ask for help and help others. Play to your strengths and work as a team – both at work and with your partner and kids. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, to offer it to others and to involve your kids in tasks to get more done.
7 Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun. Laugh, sing, cook, play a game, run, get outside – whatever makes your heart sing. Do it for yourself, as a team or as a family.
So, if you are feeling overwhelmed or like work is taking over, then pick one of these and give it a go.
If it works, pick another one and try that too. If it doesn’t – then try a different one. Whichever one you pick, give it a go for a month and see the difference it can make.
