How many times have you wanted to do something and then thought about all the things you need to do, freaked yourself out and ended up doing nothing?

Yup, that. It happens to us all.

Whether the goal is to build a social media plan for your business, retraining for a new career or setting a health goal, sometimes we can’t see the wood for the trees or even believe it can be done.

So what can you do to take action without being overwhelmed by the enormity of it all?

Get out of your own way

Sounds simple, right?

Well, actually it is. Once you get out of your own way.

I know this from my own recent experience of starting the Couch to 5K learn to run programme.

As a coach, I help my clients explore any mindset blocks or limiting beliefs that might be stopping them moving forward with their goals. So I dug deep and realised that I hear myself often say “I do yoga and swimming, but I don’t run”.

So there’s my limiting belief right there. “I don’t run.”

This statement was often accompanied by, “I don’t want to do it”, “it’s not me”, “I don’t know how to” and “I’ll never be able to”.

Change the script

As soon as a realised this, I decided to knock it off and change the script to “I do run” and took that first step to make that true.

I downloaded the Couch to 5K app, put on my trainers and plugged in my headphones and got started.

Step by step

The brilliant thing about Coach to 5K is that it takes you from zero to running 5k in 9 weeks.

The training starts with short runs broken up with fast walking breaks to recover without stopping. This method also helps avoid shin splints for newbie runners.

The whole programme is a step by step process, literally!

Each week you have three 30 minute sessions, lead by a celebrity audio coach on the app (I chose Jo Whiley), who tells you when to walk and run and is your cheerleader too.

Take that first step

The thing I found is to just go.

Put the trainers on and go. Listen to the app, trust the process and don’t think too much about it.

And so far it’s working. I’ve completed week three!

No shin splints, and yes, a fair bit of sweating. Plus a wonderful rush from the cardio and from knowing that I CAN RUN! 🙂

Yes it might me broken up with walking right now, but I’m doing it. I’m making progress. And I’m actually enjoying it!

Extra benefits

As I’ve been out on these runs, I have had time to reflect and tap into my creativity.

I’ve seen parallels with this running programme and the coaching programmes that I offer.

If you have an idea of your goal, do some inner work to overcome what’s blocking you, lay out a step by step plan and get the courage to take that first step, then before you know it, your life will be on a new path.

There have been all kinds of other benefits to getting out on these runs.

Fresh air, nature, sunlight, listening to music, deep breathing, toning arms and tummy, generating happy hormones like serotonin and being a good role model for my daughter in living the Growth Mindset.
